My friends and I were enjoying a stellar first-day-of-summer night outside of a dive bar in lower Manhattan when we learned the United States is headed back to war in the Middle East. The three of us had an immediate, vocal reaction to the news that hit us suddenly. We moved quickly from “there it is” to a state of tragic bemusement.
Not this fucking shit again. My entire adolescence wasn’t enough for these ghouls? Now it has to demolish my adult life, too?
War. Another incomprehensibly unnecessary war. Nobody fucking wants this. The United States government had to deceive its own citizens into believing that it wanted this the first time. Now we just know better and have to face the agony of doing this shit again.
When we learned that the United States had attacked Iran, I felt immediately transported back to 2003 — this time having lived through it and learned that this shit doesn’t work.1 Another horseshit imperialist war that nobody fucking wants. A war that is, in the vernacular of one of the primary architects of this shitshow: nucular.
